The Skrinjaric Estate burned down to the ground during the many sieges of 1995 that occurred in Pokupsko, Croatia. Miraculously, when all of the homestead’s numerous edifices, stables, barns and storage units were destroyed, the only building that remained fully intact was the main house, and the original home of my maternal great, great, great grandparents.
Their house was constructed from full sized oak planks, with small windows fitted over 150 years ago. This home survived centuries, including a long history of three major wars, and many tales of life secreted within its walls. Stories of my family’s joyous and darker moments were kept alive and brought to life through its inhabitants. Vila Dora is a gatekeeper of antiquity, a monument unto itself, standing proudly upon a hilltop, appearing beautiful in every season whether she is boasting flowers, vegetable gardens, fruit and walnut trees, or blanketed in a wintery snow!
In recent years, our latest resident, my Uncle, has taken it upon himself to secure the heart of this homestead. He has maintained its charm, but heightened it with modern necessities in all the bathrooms and kitchen. One of the stunning features that needs little enhancement, is the beautiful terrace overlooking the valley, and the rolling hills surrounding it. This is the favored place for all visitors, a space to celebrate life cycle events, or to just simply share the love of friends and family.
Vila Dora represents and captures the essence of country living at its best. For any guest who ventures in for a long while, or merely a few days to relax and soak it all in, rest assured you will be nurtured and nourished by the delicious authentic country cooking and generous spirit of her hosts Bozo and Nena.
Looking forward sharing Vila Dora with you soon!
